Family Life Christian Church International was birthed out of a crusade in Lynchburg, Virginia. The church has outgrown its meeting space and childcare center in a Timberlake Road shopping center. The church acquired a new 35-acre site nearby and was interested in developing a three-phase master plan to include a multi-purpose center, gymnasium building and 1,200 seat sanctuary. Hughes Associates met with the Pastors and Building Committee in early 2005 to commence master site planning and design of the 24,000 SF, multi-purpose center which would serve as a 750 seat sanctuary, classroom, office and daycare program space until the construction of the larger, permanent sanctuary building.
Hughes Associates provided plans, revisions and coordination with a contractor, pre-engineered building manufacturer, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design builder and structural engineer. Since the church services are televised weekly, we also coordinated the sanctuary and audio/visual control areas with audio and lighting specialists to meet the church’s high broadcast standards. During the project, HAA provided cost savings services and construction administration to the completion of the building. Currently HAA is designing an entrance road from Timberlake Road which was previously eliminated in one of the rounds of cost savings measures.
The design concept for the church was a modern, galleria theme departing from traditional regional church design with suppressed arches in the façade, roof, windows, doors and an entry vaulted ceiling. The prominent entry façade is located on the building corner and expresses the coalescence of two opposed forces which form the core of Christianity– the mortal with the divine, the earthly and the heavenly, the sinful with the righteous. Together these forces ascend into the image of a crown. |
