Smith Residence
New Construction |
Morehead City, NC
Completion: 2007 |
After months of considering how to make the family vacation home more livable for their extended family’s holidays, the owners decided to raze the 1940’s era bungalow and replace with a larger, modern home suitable for four generations. They wanted a house that retained the flavor of the old beach cottage. From the street, the house looks conventional with wrap-around porch and punched double hung windows. On the waterside, however, it opens up with a series of large windows offering panoramic views of the bay and Bogue Sound.
The exterior of the house has been constructed with low maintenance, highly durable materials ready to withstand hurricane force winds. These include a split face block foundation, fiber cement siding, impact resistant windows, stainless steel flashing, a standing seam metal porch roof, and 50-year fiberglass shingles. |

Hughes Associates Architects remodeled the interior of the existing house and additions were designed to add a master bedroom and bath, family room and a mudroom. The existing kitchen was modified and a laundry room added to the main floor. The roof was removed from the existing den and replaced at a higher elevation to add height to the room. A detached two-car garage with loft storage was also included within our project scope.
