First & Main Shopping Center
First & Main Shopping Center Blacksburg, Virginia
Project Completion: 2008

Hughes Associates was commissioned to optimize the Town of Blacksburg approved underground stormwater management basin to make it more economical.  Hughes worked directly with the developer and the pipe manufacturer to develop a system that would ultimately save the developer almost $2 million.  The system consists of over 1,300 linear feet of 12’ diameter spiral metal pipe, with almost 80% of the pipe being perforated.  The system is enveloped with a 360’ x 80 x 15’ heavy-duty LDPE/HDPE liner and backfilled with gravel.  The system is 10’ to 15’ below a surface parking lot and provides 5.51 acre-feet (240,000 cubic feet) of storage.

The system also incorporates a vortex valve, a head-building chamber, and a series of up-flow filters.  All of these items allowed for an efficient design that met the Town of Blacksburg’s and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation water quality and water quantity requirements.  HA also worked with the Town of Blacksburg’s engineer to gain final approval.
